I would like to see term limits for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate equal to three terms in the senate (eighteen years). Originally service as an elected official was a duty that one could perform for your country much like jury duty or fighting in a war. Now it has become a profession with people staying in office up to 50 years. In most elections congressmen run unopposed because the system has changed to strongly favor those already in an elected office.
The limit of eighteen years is long enough for the elected officials to learn their job and do it for a long time if they really are that good, a total of 36 years in both the house and senate. It is also short enough that most will not give up the idea of having a real job and thus be better connected to those whom they represent. I have also seen too many reports of pork and other waste, and it tends to be members who have been in the government for a while who do this.
The Democrat party has more than doubled the number of earmarks since it took control of congress when it promised to ban the practice.
(republicanleader.house.gov) Congress in general has been too involved in people's everyday lives and spends too much money.
This relates to another large concern I have with congress and that is that congress is exempt from some of the laws they pass. How can they possibly understand the effect of a law when they do not even have to follow it? For more information on this I recommend Tom Coburn’s book, “Breach of Trust”. |
